Setting Up and Using Jigoshop

I’m going to be doing a detailed installation and explanation of Jigoshop since a lot of people seem to have trouble with it, I’m sure I’ll find something to sell. Jigoshop is very quick to set-up, has a lot of options, and gives reports of your inventory etc… It is powerful but a little tricky the first time.

  • PHP version 5.2.4 or greater
  • MySQL version 5.0 or greater
  • The mod_rewrite Apache module (for permalinks)
  • Some payment gateways require fsockopen support (for IPN access)

Also the uploading and activating procedure for those of you that are unfamiliar.

  1. Download the Jigoshop plugin file
  2. Unzip the file into a folder to your computer
  3. Upload the /jigoshop/ folder to the /wp-content/plugins/ folder on your site

Now go to your wordpress dashboard. Jigoshop has created new pages for you. In your menu simply ad shop to see your store. Add cart to see cart etc… From my site.

Soon your catalog will be filled with your products, but first. In your wordpress dashboard click jigoshop –> settings.

Settings

There are a lot of options here, but don’t worry most are pretty straightforward.

General Settings simply fill out your company info.

Pages deals with permalinks and shortcodes. No need to change anything.

Catalog and Pricing Here you setup what currency to use and how many products per page etc.. I recommend at least 5 products per row.

Image Options deals with cropping and thumbnails, defaults should be fine.

Coupons defaults should be fine unless you want setup coupons.

Products and Inventory select a weight unit, ie. Kilograms or pounds and change inventory options if you want.

Shipping fill this out with your costs.

Tax set to charge taxes and create tax rules by country. ie. Choose standard rate, country, and the % tax to charge.

Payment Gateways the most important setting!! For bank transfer, fill out bank info. For PayPal, fill out your PayPal info.

Adding Your Products

In your WordPress dashboard under jigoshop go Products –> Add Product

Before you add a product, create a category for it first on the right hand side of the add product page. If you require more detailed categories set it up in Product –> Product Categories first.

Now type your products title, description, and choose a category.

Under “Product Data”, choose simple product type, and write a short description about the product

Fill in weight and SKU.

Select price tab and fill in the price and tax options.

If you want to include an image for the item set it as the featured image on the right.

Keep at it and you’ll have a fully stocked store, from my site, click to check it out.

Your cart and check outs should be working as well.

Managing Your Orders

To view your orders click Jigoshop –> Orders

Here you can see your orders status there are 6 types.

Pending – An order has been placed but not yet paid for. For example, through PayPal.

On-Hold – Manual payment methods will automatically be placed on-hold. You will manually have to process these orders. Usually from the Bank Transfer or cheque gateway.

Processing – The product has been successfully paid for, just not yet shipped.

Completed – The customer receives a notification that their order is complete. This usually signifies shipment to be complete.

Cancelled – The customer (or admin) cancelled this order.

Refunded – The customer (or admin) refunded this order.

Check your dashboard for statistics and recent orders at Jigoshop –> Dashboard

From here you can see:

Stats: Shop Content

Stats: Orders

If you check Orders –> All Orders you’ll be able to see all your orders. If you click the order number you’ll be able to edit the order. You should do edit each order as you ship so the client knows

Extensions / Plugins

Plugins for Jigoshop are installed just like regular WordPress plugins from the Plugins –> Add New page. After you activate them, most plugins will take effect immediately. For example, if you install a payment method plugin such as Robokassa or Custom Payment Gateway, those methods will be automatically available at checkout. Others such as Currency Converter from the Jigoshop website will add a menu item Jigoshop –> Manage Exchange Rates for you to use to setup your sites exchange rates. Plugins can turn a very plain standard store into a very intuitive and robust online outlet for your goods. A lot of the plugins cost money but there are many excellent free ones available right off the Jigoshop website.

Themes

Jigoshop will work with lots of WordPress themes just fine, and there are lots of free Jigoshop WordPress themes. Also paid ones are available. For now those are my recommendations. I will be doing an article in the short future on wrapping your shops contents into a WordPress theme when you have a different theme you like to use. Check Jigoshop’s website for plenty of themes that work out of the box or just try your favorites.

Recommendations / Tips

Make sure you keep on top of your orders and change the status of each one you ship.

Do take advantage of all the plugins available to add functionality to your store.

Update your store regularly.

Do create SEO friendly descriptions of your products.

Thoroughly test and re-test.
