  1. I bought the All Pro Package a few years ago, and nowhere near learning all about them. Any idea on best blog commenting system for use on Genesis and Child Themes?

  2. A.D. Is right Genesis is hyped but this whole 10 best thing..this article by its self is without substance.. I see this all the time ..Blog features a set of best themes but there is no real information..yes some of the above themes are good..but why? really- why not drill down, offer reasons that are not 100% apparent..I am a pro plus member so I have been around Genesis for years. Agent press for one is well known to be in dire need of a update and if you have spent anytime in the Genesis forums you would know that.. It is consider long in the tooth so to speak..Good yes but not great at this point. Epik is a Market place theme and would be a additional 25$ to purchase it after you bought the Genesis framework. So your price on that is incorrect. Epick also has some issues that are to be addressed in a update..not huge issues but no space here to document..it’s a very decent theme but best? I would not say so..
I can recommend a person can purchase it..however.
In all each description might as well be a simple sales description from Studiopress.
One final addition to mr. A.D. Genesis will make you re-write code form the WordPress codex to make it work in a Genesis theme.. Why? a lot of reasons but mostly because Genesis templates open and close with custom PHP code.. if you doubt my statement get a genesis template and add some codex code for fun and watch the errors..
So to sum up Genesis is more work or more time spent in the support forums. The point being I think is a person tries to be efficient. Genesis can be a fast set up and do it all if you know your way around some code.
Finally- blog owner and author here do not take offense just know that *some of your readers are more sophisticated and would like to see some stronger content..if thats possible..

    1. Thanks for your feedback Beth. Personally I use Genesis and enjoy using it, it’s got a great community built around it and you can find code snippets from top developers such as Gary Smith and Bill Erickson. The newer designs are also very attractive in my opinion.

  3. Would have shared some love and I love these themes so far. Your post reached me too late- I am sure an affiliate link is was in here. Cheers

  4. I’m always intrigued by articles that start (and end) “Genesis is the best framework for WordPress”. They rarely if ever justify their conclusion.

I wonder – do the authors of these articles ever try adapting the themes they praise for anyone but the least demanding clients?

I do this regularly – at present much of my work is contract web design and in recent months I’ve been required to use Genesis in this work; it’s been specified for me. As a consequence, I’m regularly forced to spend HOURS fudzing in an attempt to adapt scantily-documented Genesis themes, like those cited above, to clients’ real-life wishes.

It’s like a form of (quite unnecessary) intellectual torture; effects I can achieve in a few minutes in a framework such as Pagelines take me HOURS to achieve – often by trial and error – in Genesis.

I would MUCH rather start designing with a blank page than a page cluttered with someone else’s design design ideas – often quite deeply embedded in the theme. The Pagelines framework allows me that freedom; that’s why I use it on my own clients. It gives me the things I always want built in (eg responsiveness) without loading me up with lots of design detail I neither want nor need, which actually takes me time to shed.

In 2013, Genesis, IMO, is akin to the Emperor with no clothes; sold by hype and appealing above all to the uncritical and credulous.

    1. You pretty much summed up my thoughts. Only it’s Pagelines for you and iThemes Builder for me.

    2. Both Genesis and PageLines are good, and they appeal to a different user group in my opinion, so I understand your frustration seeing that you don’t prefer to work the Genesis way. PageLines have just announced that they will be releasing a revolutionary new successor to the PageLines framework, so it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

  5. Hi Jean…

I’m using Genesis as the framework, with Dynamic as a child theme and the Premise membership from CopyBlogger.

    Works a treat…

I’m still learning though – but that is what we do all the time, don’t we?

  6. Of course I knew that Genesis was the number one WordPress theme framework in popularity, but when we recently introduced our new Top WordPress Themes reports feature I was surprised to find that a couple of Genesis child themes were also included within the top 25 themes. These are the themes most frequently detected by our online tool WPThemeDetector.com throughout thousands of searches, therefore the most popular themes (at least among our users).

At the time of writing this comment, News is ranking #17 and Eleven40 is #21, but there are also some other Genesis child themes coming close to the top 25, like Minimum, Lifestyle, Generate and Metro. Genesis itself is always very well positioned on #1, never moving from there.

No wonder StudioPress always ranks as the #1 provider of WordPress themes, and by a large advantage over the rest!

  7. I agree with most of your choices. However, lately I have been using Magazine a lot. it is flexible and works for sites that are not as text-heavy as those you’d make with Prose, but also do not use many images. Prose is excellent for a wide variety of (non-image-heavy) sites, and the Custom Code area for css and extra php is a fantastic idea. I wish that the other child themes featured that as well.

    1. Thanks for your feedback Reed, I agree with you that Magazine is a very good child theme and most worthy of inclusion. Then again, it’s hard to find any Genesis child themes which are not good 🙂
