Today I want to share my review of one of the best books I've read in the past months, The Year Without Pants by Scott Berkun. It's a book that has been selected as one of Amazon's best books of 2013, and in my opinion anyone who works with WordPress should go through it.

YWP-COVER-FINALToday I want to share my review  of one of the best books I’ve read in the past months, The Year Without Pants by Scott Berkun. It’s a book that has been selected as one of Amazon’s best books of 2013, and in my opinion anyone who works with WordPress should go through it.

This book gives us the inside scoop on what it’s like to work at WordPress.com, where everyone works from home, no one uses email and dozens of improvements launch to customers every day. It’s a unique first-hand account from Scott, who was hired to work with Automattic, where he spent a year in different positions, ending up as the first team leader in a traditionally flat company.

Remote working is definitely here to stay, but making it work can be a challenge for both managers and employees. This is a book that will help both types. Automattic are doing a great job when it comes to remote working, and this is the closest you can get to the innards of this company without being actually employed there (by no means a bad alternative).

Here’s the entertaining trailer for the book:

The Year Without Pants might come with a surprising cover, but its an excellent read, in fact I went through it in one or two sittings. It was entertaining but also offered a wealth of gold nuggets in terms of tips and tricks to make remote working work. Since I’m a WordPress fan, I also enjoyed reading about how the day to day business is done at Automattic.

Definitely one of the best books of 2013, and one that I will be keeping handy as I refer back to it when implementing remote working arrangements for my own team.

  1. Brilliant! Pretty much how I envisage my 11-yr-old ‘working’! He’s already anti-institution (first year senior seriously awful and no ‘joy of learning’ in sight!). He wonders why he’s there every day as he learns far more himself. Rules, regs and policies and procedures seem all the school is interested in. The death of creativity starts with school! I work at home, but it’s not always perhaps as liberating as the clip suggests – despite the Med on my doorstep. Must read this and get a handle on how to up the anti on the home-work thing, and so I can guide my son for the best.

    1. I’d love to see more mums like you Liz, especially in a traditional society like Malta, where getting that coveted university degree at all costs is the order of the day.
